Where to stay

Where should you stay in Udupi?

An honest answer from people who live here — including the times you shouldn’t stay with us. Udupi is small, so almost everything is within twenty minutes of everything else. What really changes your trip is what kind of roof you choose, and how many of you are under it.

Four kinds of stay

What Udupi actually offers.

There are four broad choices in and around town. Each is right for somebody.

A whole home (homestay / villa)

Best for Families and groups of 5–15, reunions, weddings, NRI homecomings

What it gives you

  • One roof, one dinner table — nobody is in a different corridor
  • A kitchen of your own, and a cook on request
  • Space that hotels charge four rooms for: living rooms, a yard, a terrace
  • Privacy — no lobby, no strangers, no queue at breakfast

What to weigh

  • Best value from about five guests upward; a couple may find a room cheaper
  • Book early for December, January and wedding season

This is what Spanda is: five bedrooms, the whole house yours, a kilometre from the Krishna Matha.

Hotels near the temple

Best for Solo pilgrims, couples, one or two nights

What it gives you

  • Walking distance to the Sri Krishna Matha and Car Street
  • Room service, daily housekeeping, easy last-minute booking

What to weigh

  • A family of ten becomes four or five separate rooms
  • The temple quarter is lively — and loud — early and late

Good for a short darshan trip. Less good when the point of the journey is being together.

Beach resorts at Malpe & Kaup

Best for Beach holidays, couples, guests who want a pool

What it gives you

  • Sand at your doorstep and sunset every evening
  • Pools, restaurants, water sports arranged for you

What to weigh

  • 6–15 km from the temple and the old town — you will drive for everything else
  • Monsoon months trade the swimming for spectacular, un-swimmable sea

Beautiful for three days by the water. Udupi itself is a drive away.

Service apartments in Manipal

Best for Parents visiting MAHE, long work stays, medical visits

What it gives you

  • Next to the campus and the hospitals
  • Kitchenettes, weekly rates, a young town that stays open late

What to weigh

  • Campus town energy rather than coastal quiet
  • Small units — a large family ends up split across flats

Manipal is 6 km from us, fifteen minutes. Many parents stay in Udupi and drive up.

The short answer

Tell us the trip, we’ll tell you the roof.

A temple pilgrimage
Stay in the city centre, within a kilometre or two of the Matha. Dawn darshan is the best darshan, and you will want to walk to it rather than drive.
A family reunion of 8–15
Take a whole house. Splitting a family across hotel rooms is the one decision people regret — the shared kitchen and living room are where the trip actually happens.
Parents visiting Manipal
Either Manipal itself or the Udupi city centre. Udupi is quieter, greener and fifteen minutes from campus; Manipal is closer to the hospital gates.
A beach holiday
Malpe or Kaup if you want sand outside the door — but keep a car, because Udupi’s food and temples are inland.
A wedding or a celebration
A whole home with a yard. Guests come and go all day, the caterers need a kitchen, and somebody always needs a room to change in.
Coming home from abroad
Somewhere with space for the whole family and an airport transfer arranged. Mangaluru is 60 km away and the roads are unfamiliar after a long flight.
Just the two of you
A room in a good hotel near the temple, or a beach resort at Malpe. A five-bedroom house is a lot of house for two.

The lie of the land

Udupi’s four corners.

Distances are from the town centre. Nothing here is far.

Brahmagiri & the city centre ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಗಿರಿ

The heart of Udupi — the Matha, Car Street, the market and the old eating houses, all within a kilometre or two. Quiet residential lanes behind a busy little town.

Pilgrims, first-time visitors, families who want everything close

This is our neighbourhood.

Malpe & the coast ಮಲ್ಪೆ

Sand, the fishing harbour, the ferry to St Mary’s Island, and sunsets that draw the whole town. Six kilometres west of the centre.

Beach days, water sports, seafood

15 minutes from our gate.

Manipal ಮಣಿಪಾಲ

The hill town above Udupi — MAHE, the hospitals, End Point, and cafés that stay open past midnight.

College visits, medical trips, remote work

15 minutes uphill.

Kaup & the southern coast ಕಾಪು

The 1901 lighthouse on black rock, quieter beaches, and the road south towards Mangaluru.

Sunsets, photography, an unhurried day out

30 minutes down the coast road.

And where we fit

If there are five or more of you,
take the whole house.

Spanda is a five-bedroom heritage home in Brahmagiri — the whole house, one group at a time, sleeping up to fifteen. A kilometre from the Sri Krishna Matha, fifteen minutes from Malpe and Manipal, an hour and a half from Mangaluru airport. A kitchen you can use, a long table to fill, a hundred-year-old mango tree, and a caretaker on site day and night.

And if you are one or two people here for a night’s darshan — stay near the temple, walk to it at dawn, and eat at Mitra Samaj afterwards. We would tell our own family the same.

Asked often

Straight answers.

Where is the best area to stay in Udupi?

For most visitors, the city centre around Brahmagiri and Car Street — you are within a kilometre or two of the Sri Krishna Matha, the market and the old eating houses, and fifteen minutes from both Malpe Beach and Manipal. Stay at Malpe if the beach is the point of the trip, or in Manipal if you are visiting the university or the hospitals.

Is a homestay better than a hotel in Udupi?

It depends on how many of you there are. For one or two people on a short darshan trip, a hotel near the temple is simple and cheap. For a family or a group of five or more, a whole-home homestay usually costs less than the equivalent block of hotel rooms and gives you a kitchen, living rooms and a garden — and, more to the point, keeps everyone under one roof instead of scattered along a corridor.

Is Spanda Homestay on Airbnb?

We take bookings directly, by email — write to [email protected] with your dates and who is coming, and a person (not a form) will reply. Booking direct means we can shape the stay around you: airport pickup, a car and driver, a cook, an itinerary. If you would rather book through a platform, ask us and we will point you to our current listing.

How much does it cost to stay at Spanda Homestay?

Rates depend on the season, the length of your stay and how many of you there are, so we quote them personally rather than posting a number that would be wrong half the year. Write to us with your dates and we will send a clear, all-in figure — including the car and driver if you would like the airport-to-airport package.

What is there for a large group or joint family in Udupi?

Very little in conventional hotels — most cap out at a handful of adjoining rooms. Whole-home stays are the practical answer. Spanda has five bedrooms and sleeps up to fifteen, with several living rooms, a long dining table, a games room, a pooja room, a yoga room, a front yard and a small stage for celebrations.

Can we cook our own food?

Yes. The kitchen is fully stocked and it is yours — many families cook their own breakfast and eat out for lunch. If you would rather not lift a finger, we can arrange a local cook to make a coastal meal at your own table, with a day’s notice.

Is there parking, and do you allow pets?

There is free off-street parking inside the gate, and a private room for your driver on request. We are not able to host pets.

How far is Udupi from Mangalore airport, and can you collect us?

Mangaluru International Airport (IXE) is about 60 km away — an hour and a half on a good coastal highway. Yes, we can collect you: a car and a driver we trust will be waiting, and we can keep them at your disposal for the whole stay and drop you back at the end.
